Love one another as Jesus has loved us.

Last week while packing boxes in preparation to move into their new house. My daughter discovered a treasure map that Justin treasure mapmy husband had drawn for our grandson when he was a young child. Like many young children, Justin dreamt of being a pirate and discovering lost treasure. Treasure that would buy everything his heart desired. Making him not only rich but also famous. Knowing how excited Justin would be if he discovered lost treasure. His papaw drew him a “treasure” map.

Knowing this was a special moment between a grandfather and grandson. I watched from the kitchen window as Papaw accompanied Justin on his quest for buried treasure. The joy on both my husband’s and Justin’s face was priceless. A moment in time that neither Justin or my husband would ever forget.

justin texas jack On that day Justin discovered “treasure” and believed he had accomplished the impossible. Even later when he realized that it was his papaw’s map not Texas Jack’s. Justin was happy. After all, a pirate’s treasure couldn’t compare to the treasure that was his on a daily basis— his papaw’s love.

Justin no longer is that little boy pretending to be a pirate. Searching for buried treasure. He graduated from high school last month and is preparing to enter college to begin a new quest for treasure. As I watched him walk across the graduation stage, sorrow pierced my heart. For you see, his papaw wasn’t there this time to see the joy on his grandson’s face. It’s been eight years since Papaw went home to be with Jesus. However, he forever will be remembered by one young man who many years ago discovered a treasure of incomparable worth— his Papaw’s love.

Thanks for listening to my voice! Feel free to like and share it with your friends.

Have a great day! Rita

A Really beautiful story…makes me sad. At some point each of us becomes, just a memory.

Yes, it was heart wrenching to write it, remembering what was. I too was reminded that we and those we love aren’t guaranteed a tomorrow.

I am so glad that he was able to be a part of Justin’s life but also saddened when I think of how my girls were not able to have that. However one day, they each will be able meet and spend eternity with him.

Won’t that be a wonderful day when we’re all together again? No more tears forever, only joy!

  3. What a beautiful, but also sad, story. I bet his pawpaw was watching down and smiling with you as Justin received his diploma.

We remember this moment with great fondness. It was right up there with Moe chasing Justin across the yard. Both of their faces were so full of life when Wayne presented this treasure map. Justin and Wayne shared a kindred spirit and always enjoyed their time together. I know Wayne would have been just as proud of Justin as we all are. I think he would have been even prouder to see Justin grow up to be such a kind hearted, hard working, dependable adult. Ironically, it is Wayne who we see the most of when we look at Justin. Wayne served as a fine example. Regardless of time, it shows how important love is and a direct correlation in the fruit it has turned up in his now little 6’1″ grandson.

Beautifully said Frank! I think I’ll add the “Moe” incident to my list of blog subjects. I still smile each time I think of it.
